Using the Results Upload Manager (RUM)

Overview

RUM is a tool that allows administrators to upload course results to the LMS/SkillPort. When users complete courses using the SkillSoft Course Manager CD-ROM utility, they export the results to a zip file. This zip file is then given to an administrator, who uploads it to the LMS/SkillPort via RUM. This document describes how to install, configure and use RUM, as well as how to configure the SCM for use with RUM.

Enabling/Disabling the Export button in the SCM

RUM is enabled by default in the SCM CD-ROM. Follow the procedures below to disable the Export button.

To disable the Export button on a Master CD so it will not be enabled when users install the CD-ROM:

  1. Open the ocm.ini file in Notepad (path from the root directory: content/client/ocm.ini)
  2. Set the exportResult parameter to false (eg. exportResult=false). Ensure there is a carriage return/new line character at the end of the parameter.
  3. Save the file.

To disable the Export button in the SCM CD-ROM after it has been installed to a client workstation:

  1. Open the ocm.ini file on the workstation using Notepad (path from the root directory: /client/ocm.ini)
  2. Set the exportResult parameter to false (eg. exportResult=false). Ensure there is a carriage return/new line character at the end of the parameter.
  3. Save the file.

Using RUM with the SCM

When RUM is enabled in the SCM, the Export button appears in the SCM Progress Tab. When users click the Export button, they are prompted to specify a location to save the zip file. This zip file contains their course results, and can be emailed or put on floppy disk and sent to their administrator.

Installing and Configuring RUM

To install RUM, run setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. When the installation is complete, open rum.ini using Notepad or a similar text editor. (This file will be located in the directory where you installed RUM.) Then complete the following values:

  • Protocol – the protocol to use when communicating with the server on which the LMS is installed, either HTTP or HTTPS (if secure communication is required).
  • Server – the name of the server the LMS is installed on, not including the protocol. e.g. skillport.skillsoft.com.
  • Company – the LMS’ company name (specified in General Settings on the SkillPort Company page in the SkillPort Master Administrator).
  • USECGI – set this value to true or false depending on how your LMS is configured. If using aiccisapi.dll, set to false. If using aicccgi.exe, set to true.
  • IS-SP7 - Set this value to true or false depending on the LMS version. If using SP 7.0 or above, set to true. For all other versions, set to false.
  • COMPANY-SNAME - The LMS' company short name (specified in General Settings on the SkillPort Company page in the SkillPort Master Administrator).
  • ResultsPath – path to a directory where the users’ zip files will be stored, for example, C:\\results

Note: You must enter two backslashes when specifying this path.

Once you’ve entered this information, save and close rum.ini. RUM is now properly installed and configured.

Launching RUM

You may launch the program by double clicking on its icon, or by going to Start>Programs>SkillSoft>Result Upload Manager. When prompted, enter your SkillPort username and password and click OK.

Using RUM

Note: To run RUM, you must have a SkillPort user ID with administrator privileges.

When a user emails a zip file to you, copy that file to your Results directory. Then:

  1. Open RUM. The window will display the names of the users whose files you have received, the number of course results contained in each of those files, and if the file has been uploaded or not. If a user does not appear, ensure that his/her file is in the Results directory and click the Refresh button.
  2. Highlight the user whose results you wish to upload and click the Submit Results button. You may select multiple users by holding down the Control key and clicking on their names. A success message will appear stating that the file was posted to the LMS/SkillPort.
  3. Click the View Log button to view detailed information about the zip files you just posted.
  4. Once the zip file has been posted, a check will appear in the Completed field. A check will only appear in the checkbox if all results contained in the zip file are successfully uploaded. e.g. If the zip file contains exported results for 3 courses and only 2 of these courses are installed on the LMS, the full upload will not be successful and the checkbox in the 'Completed' column will not be checked. Click the Refresh button to remove completed items from the grid.

Once a zip file is submitted, it is moved to Results\Completed. This subdirectory is created automatically the first time a file is posted. You will periodically need to delete the files in this folder to prevent it from taking up too much disk space.
