Manage Retired Content
The Manage retirement date feature lets you extend the availability of select Skillsoft content that is scheduled to retire or was recently retired. This helps you prevent disruptions to active assignments, journeys, and learning programs when retirement time lines do not align with your organization’s needs.
You can extend eligible content for up to 365 days beyond the original Skillsoft retirement date, giving learners additional time to complete in‑progress learning while you plan transitions to replacement content.
How Retirement Extensions Work
Keep the following in mind when using this feature:
- Extensions are always set at 365 days past the original Skillsoft retirement date. You cannot choose a shorter or custom duration. For example, if today's date was March 2, 2026 and an item retired January 15, 2026 and you choose to extend the retirement date today or six months from now, the new retirement date would always be January 14, 2027.
- Only Skillsoft courses (including compliance courses) and book reviews can be extended. Linked content, skill benchmarks, books, journeys, and labs do not support retirement extension.
- Extensions apply only to your site and do not change Skillsoft’s global retirement status for the content.
- Extended content remains available wherever it was previously used, including assignments and journeys.
- When you extend the retirement date, the platform recalculates the new retirement date out a year past the original retirement date, and learners only see retiring notifications when a course is within three months of the new retirement date.
- Learners retain progress their progress if the original retirement dates passes and then you extend it.
- If replacement content exists, both the extended content and its replacement may be available at the same time.
- Changes to search visibility or learner messaging should be available within 30 minutes after extending or undoing a retirement extension date.
- If you choose to extend retirement dates especially for Skillsoft compliance courses, you run the risk that your learners are training on outdated content, and if you continue to use the retired course in your learning programs, you may be out of compliance.

Use these steps to keep eligible content available beyond its scheduled retirement.

Undo a Retirement Extension
Use these steps if you no longer want extended content to remain available.
- From the left navigation, select Content > Manage retirement date.

- Select Undo. The content reverts to its original Skillsoft retirement date. If the item is still eligible, you can extend it again later, but it will only extend up to 365 days from the original Skillsoft retirement date.
