Minimum 512 MB RAM

Internet connection is required to download patches.

Minimum video resolution of 800 x 600 with 16-bit color

Operating Systems

Microsoft® Windows® XP with all current service packs and hot fixes installed.

If you are using Windows XP, you require Administrator or Power User privileges. If you have normal user privileges the following restrictions will apply:

  • The Download Software Updates feature will not work as you will not have the rights to update the relevant configuration file.
  • If you do not have Internet Explorer 6 SP 1 and you attempt to import a Word, Excel, PowerPoint or PDF file, a message will be displayed indicating that your security settings do not allow the file to be downloaded. This is a problem in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 and 6.0, which was corrected in Internet Explorer 6 SP 1. For more information see http://support.microsoft.com.
  • If you attempt import a Word, Excel, PowerPoint or PDF file, the File Download Dialog box will appear.

Workaround: De-select the "Always ask before opening this type of file" check box in the File Download dialog box. For more information see, http://support.microsoft.com.

Microsoft Windows Vista - Vista Business, Home and Ultimate are supported including SP1 with and without Aero active.

Microsoft Windows version 7, 8, and 8.1

Third-Party Software and Add-Ons

Microsoft Office must be installed. The following versions are supported:

  • Microsoft Office 2007, 2010, and 2013

Minimum Requirements for Plug-Ins

  • Adobe Flash 6.0 or higher is required if the Playback option in the Recorder and the Play Movie option is to be used in Dialogue Design.
  • Adobe Flash 7 or higher is required to play a course if you record a movie using the Flash 7 recording option.

JRE Support for Java-dependent Content

Oracle JRE™ 1.6.0_01 or higher is required in order to publish Java-dependent, custom content to Skillport that you want to Preview.

JRE is not required for Java-free content.

All Skillsoft product releases support the latest fully released version of the Oracle JRE.

  • For a given product release, the tested versions of the Oracle JRE are determined as of the date of final sign-off of the software requirements specification. If an Oracle JRE is released after the sign-off date, verification is scheduled for the next available product release.
  • Verification for new versions of the Oracle JRE are automatically included as part of ongoing development efforts.
  • Skillsoft does not formally support any JRE that has not been fully released by Oracle.
  • Incremental updates to the Oracle JRE are not expected to present major challenges. If issues with a specific Oracle JRE occur, the problems are analyzed to determine the best course of corrective action.

Course File Requirements

The size of a course is primarily related to the length of the course, and to a lesser extent, the type of slide, the number of slide transitions, the size of the Course Player window, the number of lessons, and if the size of the Course Player is considered.

Specific course element size requirements are:

  • Every minute of audio requires approximately 1.3 MB.
  • Each slide for 800 x 600 playback requires approximately 63 KB.
  • Each slide for 1024 x 768 playback requires approximately 107 KB.
  • Each topic segment imposes a 150 KB overhead.
  • The Skillsoft Course Player, version 7.9 SR2, which is packaged in a directory next to the course content directory, is approximately 16 MB.

For example:

  • A 15-minute course with 15 slides and one topic configured for 800 x 600 playback is 20.9 MB without the Player, 31.2 MB with the Player.
  • A 30-minute course with 15 slides and two topics configured for 800 x 600 playback is 41.8 MB without the Player, 52.1 MB with the Player.
  • A 60-minute course with 30 slides and four topics configured for 800 x 600 playback is 84.2 MB without the Player, 94.5 MB with the Player.
