Content Relationships
Content relationships enable you to link equivalent learning content—such as language or format variations—so learners can complete assignments using alternate content while preserving progress and completions within assignments or dynamic content.
When you create a content relationship, you give the learner options to take an alternate course for credit within an assignment or dynamic content.
There are two types of equivalency: Content and Translation.
Create a Content Equivalency
Before you get started creating content equivalency relationships, keep the following in mind:
- The same content item (e.g., a course or file) is allowed to exist in multiple content equivalency groups.
- In an equivalency group, you can include custom courses created in LX Design Studio or Skillsoft courses.
- Only users with the Manage equivalency permission have access to create content relationships. By default, this is only site admins, but you can enable the permission for other roles.
- When you create a content group, ensure to select: Allow completion through equivalent content when you create an assignment. This assignment setting ensures learners have the option to choose which item they want to use for the content item.
- When you create a content group, ensure to select: Allow completion through equivalent content when you create an dynamic content. This dynamic content setting ensures learners have the option to choose which content they want to use for the content item.
- When you create an equivalency, learners who are assigned any of the equivalent courses may achieve automatic completion if they already completed an equivalent item.
To create a group of content that can be equivalent to each other:
- From the left navigation bar, select Content > Content relationships. The Content Relationship page displays.
- Select the Content Equivalency tab.
- Select Create content equivalency.
- Specify a name for the group in Group name. This is required. It is best to come up with a naming convention that helps your admins identify what type of content is in each group.
- Add equivalent assets. To do so:
- Select Add asset.
- Select the language and search for the item you want to group.
- When the item displays in the list, select its blue plus sign, then selectAdd content.
- Repeat these steps until you have all content items added that you want grouped.
- Ensure the box next to: I understand creating an equivalency may automatically apply completions and impact learner progress and compliance tracking is checked.
- Select Save relationship.
Create a Translation Equivalency
Before you get started creating content equivalency relationships, keep the following in mind:
- In a translation equivalency group, you can include only your custom courses.
- Each translation group can contain only one item per language, and content items can belong to only one translation group.
- When you create a translation group, ensure to select: Learners can complete courses in any available language when you create an assignment. This assignment setting ensures learners have the option to choose which language they want to use for the content item.
- When you create a translation group, ensure to select: Learners can complete courses in any available language when you create an dynamic content. This dynamic content setting ensures learners have the option to choose which language they want to use for the content item.
- You can only group items that are of the same type. For example, you can not create a group that contains an English book and a French course.
- Only users with the Manage equivalency permission have access to create translation relationships. By default, this is only site admins, but you can enable the permission for other roles.
- When you create an equivalency, learners who are assigned any of the equivalent courses may achieve automatic completion if they already completed an equivalent item.
To create a group of content that can be equivalent to each other:
- From the left navigation bar, select Content > Content relationships. The Content Relationship page displays.
- Select the Translation Equivalency tab.
- Select Create translation equivalency. You can also create a translation equivalency for custom content from the Content items page.
For translation equivalencies, you can only add one item per language and all items have to be of the same type.
- Ensure the box next to: I understand creating an equivalency may automatically apply completions and impact learner progress and compliance tracking is checked.
- Select Save relationship.
Edit a Content Relationship
When you edit a content group you could impact a learner's completion status on an assignment or a dynamic content. If you remove a content item that the learner completed, an assignment or dynamic content with that content group may revert to an incomplete status for that learner. If you add an item that a learner completed, an assignment or dynamic content with that content grouping may become complete for that learner.
To edit a group of content that you defined as equivalent to each other:
- From the left navigation bar, select Content > Content relationships. The Content Relationship page displays.
- Choose the tab for type of equivalency you want to edit: Content or Translation.
- From the list, locate the item and from the Actions menu, select Edit relationship.
- If you want, you can change the Group name.
- You can add and remove assets.
- Add equivalent assets. To do so:
- Select Add asset.
- Select the language and search for the item you want to group.
- When the item displays in the list, select its blue plus sign, then selectAdd content.
- Repeat these steps until you have all content items added that you want grouped. For translation equivalencies, you can only add one item per language and all items have to be of the same type.
- To remove an asset from an existing group: Locate the item from the list you want to remove, select the red x. The item is immediately removed from the list. You must have at least two remaining items to update the relationship.
- Add equivalent assets. To do so:
- Ensure the box next to: I understand creating an equivalency may automatically apply completions and impact learner progress and compliance tracking is checked.
- Select Update relationship.
Delete a Content Relationship
When you delete a content relationship any equivalency between content items is removed. If a learner completed an equivalent item in an assignment or dynamic content, that completion is no longer valid. The learner will have to take the assigned course or relevant item in the dynamic content. You can delete content relationship that is being used in an assignment or dynamic content.
To delete a content relationship:
- From the left navigation bar, select Content > Content relationships. The Content Relationship page displays.
- From the list, locate the item and from the Actions menu, select Delete.
- Confirm the deletion by selecting Yes, delete. The relationship is removed immediately.
Create a Translation Equivalency from the Content Items Page
You can create a translation equivalency directly from the Content Items page as part of your process when you add custom content.
To create a translation equivalency for your custom content:
- From the left navigation bar, select Content > Content items. Ensure the custom items have been added.
- Select Bulk actions.
- Select the content items that should be grouped together. You must have at least two items of the same type but of different languages.
- Select Create translation equivalency.
- Specify a name for the group in Group name. This is required. It is best to come up with a naming convention that helps your admins identify what type of content is in each group.
- If you need to you can make adjustments to your asset list.Add equivalent assets.
- Ensure the box next to: I understand creating an equivalency may automatically apply completions and impact learner progress and compliance tracking is checked.
- Select Save relationship.
