Before You Select Content for Your Catalog

When choosing which content you want to deploy to your system's catalog, it is helpful to know your content management strategy. Percipio allows you to choose exactly the content you need for your catalog by creating a set of rules. Each rule is an instruction to either include or exclude content. All rules you create exist in a Content rule set. The Content rule set acts like a computer program that when executed selects the exact content to export or deploy to your system. Review the best practices and scenarios to understand how best to create your rules to include just the content you want.

How the Rules Work - Best Practices

When adding a rule to your Content rule set, consider the following:

  • You first define the selection type for the rule. You can either start with all content selected and remove content, or start with no content selected and add content.
  • A Content rule set can contain multiple rules.
  • If one rule excludes content, and another rule includes that content, the content is always included.
  • Use multiple rules to achieve the exact selection of content for your customized catalog.
  • When exporting or deploying content, the selection process always uses the Content rule set of all active rules.
  • If your export file is AICC, review Content Types Supported for Content Integration Customers to see which content types are supported.
  • If you are using connectors or FTP, notify your Skillsoft Application Engineer to add the Content rule set you created.
  • Once a rule is active, it will run as part of the Content rule set. To prevent a rule from running, delete it.the courses in that rule will be sent over to the LMS in the next content sync.
  • Each rule needs a name before you can save it.
  • If you are not ready to export or deploy the content associated with a rule, save the rule as a draft. You can review and add a rule at any time.
  • You can edit a rule at any time. If you edit an active rule, you cannot save it in a draft state. If you edit a draft rule, you can save it back as a draft.
  • You can remove or delete a rule at any time.
  • Any changes you make to a rule or the Content rule set impact the content in the next export or deployment.

The following scenarios show how you would configure content selection rules given different business situations.

Business Requirements My company is US-based with a Canadian office, so I will need English and French content only. I do not want my teams to see any content related to Microsoft since we do not use those products. I want to guide leaders to a particular Aspire journey focused on innovation, which is a key initiative this year. I don't mind if they discover other content while in Percipio, but I want to provide a focused-content discovery solution in my system.

One Rule Needed

 
  1. Click Create New Rule to add a new rule to your Content rule set.
  2. Choose the All Areas rule type.
  3. Search for Microsoft.
  4. Click to unselect the 2 Microsoft areas (Microsoft and Microsoft Office). This excludes all Microsoft content within the areas.
  5. Search Leadership.
  6. Click to unselect Leadership Development Program powered by MIT SMR.

  7. Click select subjects next to Aspire Journeys for Leadership.
  8. Click to unselect all subjects except Leadership Development Core Journey.
  9. With the Leadership Development Core journey selected, click Next step.
  10. Keep all content types selected.
  11. Unselect Automatically include any new languages added to Percipio in the future, then unselect all languages except for French and English.
  12. Click Review and add rule, then Add rule to add the rule.

Technology and Developer Expert
Business Requirements My company is global. I want my IT teams to only see the Cloud journeys when introducing the new catalog because cloud operations are my current business initiative. I don't mind if they discover other content while in Percipio, but I want to provide a focused-content discovery solution in my system.

One Rule Needed

 
  1. Click Create New Rule to add a new rule to your Content rule set.
  2. Choose the Only include specific channels and journeys rule type.
  3. Search for Cloud.
  4. Click the Journeys tab.
  5. Click next to each of the cloud journeys to add them.

  6. Keep all content types and languages selected.
  7. Click Review and add rule, then Add rule to add the rule.

Business Requirements My company is a global company. I want my learners to see all content that is available except for the SLDP content. I only want to make the leader journeys available, not other content.

Two Rules Needed

Rule 1: Include all content except SLDP

  1. Click Create New Rule to add a new rule to your Content rule set.
  2. Choose the All Content Collections rule type.
  3. Unselect Skillsoft Leadership Development Program from the list of collections.
  4. Keep all content types and languages selected.
  5. Click Review and add rule, then Add rule to add the rule.

Rule 2: Include only SLDP Journeys

  1. Click Create New Rule to add a new rule to your Content rule set.
  2. Choose the Only include specific channels and journeys rule type.
  3. Search for leadership.
  4. Click the Journeys tab.
  5. Click next to each of the leadership journeys you want.
  6. Keep all content types and languages selected.
  7. Click Review and add rule, then Add rule to add the rule.

Business Requirements My company is a global company. I want my learners to see just channels and journeys, no individual content items.

One Rule Needed
  1. Click Create New Rule to add a new rule to your Content rule set.
  2. Choose the Only include specific channels and journeys rule type.
  3. The Channels tab is active. Click Select all. All channels get selected.
  4. Click the Journeys tab.
  5. Click Select all. All journeys get selected..
  6. Unselect Automatically include any new content types added to Percipio in the future, then unselect all types except channel and journey.
  7. Keep all languages selected.
  8. Click Review and add rule, then Add rule to add the rule.
