If your computer has a version of the SCM installed through the online web or gendist methods, SCM MSI will not install and a message is displayed "A SCM software installed by online, CD, or gendist has been found on your machine. Please uninstall it before running this package" with error code 1638.
For window OS 32bit, a version of JRE installed is mandatory. If the JRE isn’t installed, a message is displayed "You must have a version of the Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed".
For window OS 64bit, SCM MSI is installed successfully when your computer has JRE 32bit or 64bit. If your computer has neither, a message is displayed "You must have a version of the Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed.
If SCM MSI doesn’t support a locale such as Japanese and you still install SCM with this locale (through silent mode with command line), then the SCM is still installed but can’t launch successfully because of the lack of necessary files for this locale.
Changes made during installation
When the MSI installation process is run the following changes are made to the computer:
All files for the SCM are copied to the installation folder selected
An entry is created in "Add/Remove Programs"
Start Menu Entries in ALL USERS are created for
SkillSoft > Configure Proxy: to open proxy config window.
SkillSoft > Uninstall Course Manager: to uninstall SCM.
SkillSoft > Course Manager: to launch SCM.
Desktop Icon in ALL USERS is created for Course Manager icon.
If Registry Free Mode is used (default):
A text file scm.properties is created in [AllUsers]\Application Data\SkillSoft\SCM folder. For example on Windows XP this would be C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SkillSoft\SCM
Note: If the base operating system is non-English, then "Application Data" is localized to the OS language. In this situation for Windows XP the "Application Data" folder will be created, and for all other Windows Operating Systems the SCM will force the installation of the Registry Mode.
