Course Index Editor Terminology

The Course Index Editor allows you to create and edit a course index which contains important words and phrases found in the course content. It is available to the user during course play back from the Resources and Settings Dialog found in the player.

The Course Index Editor works by defining key terms, called keywords, in the course to index. These keywords are gathered by parsing course metadata to define an initial list of index entries. Using the Course Index Editor, you can view the list of keywords and add additional keywords, remove keywords, or accept the list as is.

Below are some definitions of the Course Index Editor terminology:

• Stopword: This is a word from a pre-defined list of common words that we excluded from our search results used to produce a list of keywords (examples of stop words are "and, the, if, who, why, where, when etc"). The current list of stopwords is over 700 words.
• Keyword: These are words parsed from defined course files that are all words which are not stopwords.

  Note: A keyword may appear in the Course Index Editor, but this may not necessarily mean that this keyword will be an index entry – see hit words for clarification.

• Hit words: These are words that appear in pages that are also keywords: eg we could have the keywords (under A) of "Apple" and "Apex" if we have one page that contains "The apple" then there will be a Hit word and thus an index entry for "Apple" but no hit word would be found for "Apex" and thus no index entry of "Apex" even though "Apex" was a keyword, there are no hit words for Apex.
• Index entry: In terms of the Course Index Editor, an index entry will be any word that is a keyword which is also a hit word or compound keyword phrase (see below).
• Compound keyword phrase: This is a phrase as opposed to a single word which is indexed: Examples could be "Business skills", "Ethics in the workplace" – again this phrase will only be indexed if the criteria in point 3 is met – in other words the WHOLE phrase must meet the criteria of the hit words to be indexed.
• Restored keywords: These are words that have previously been deleted that the user wished to re-add the keyword list.
