Share Settings to Child Sites

After you create a child site, you determine how that child site behaves, who will use it, and what functionality it has. You can configure the child site completely independent from the parent site except for the license allocation and reporting, or you can push settings and content to the child site to help maintain consistency.

When you push settings from the parent, the site admins on the child site cannot change them. Only domain admins can push settings to child sites. Site admins of child sites can configure everything available on their child sites except for what is pushed from the parent.

Any time a change is made to a setting on the parent site that is shared to a child site, the child site automatically gets the update within an hour. A site or domain admin on a child site cannot push anything to the parent site.

The following are some of the key options available for configuring your child site:

In addition to the above, child sites support all functions that are available for the parent site. This includes assignments, learning programs, custom content, reporting, user management, audience management, etc.

Push site settings

After you create a child site, you can ensure it behaves the same way as the parent by pushing some or all site settings from the parent to the child.

Only the domain admin can push site settings to a child site.

Some things to keep in mind when you push site settings:

  • Each child site can have a different set of site settings pushed to it.
  • Site settings are grouped by page and section. You can choose which pages and sections get pushed. You cannot break a section into individual settings.
  • If you push site settings to a child site, you cannot push the pushed settings to another child site. You can go to the parent site, and select the child site and push the settings that way because the parent can see the fully hierarchy of child sites.
  • The site admin for a child site cannot edit any site settings that were pushed. They display grayed out.

To push site settings from the parent to any child site:

  1. Log in with your domain admin account to the parent site.
  2. Go to Site Settings > Site configuration.
  3. Select from the left navigation which pages of settings to push. You can select from the following pages:
    1. Site features
    2. Content settings
    3. Completion settings
    4. Support contacts
    5. Security and login
    6. Self registration (if enabled)
    7. Codecademy experience (if content available)
    8. AI Settings
    9. AI Coach settings (if enabled)
    10. Search results filters
  4.  After you select the page, select Push to child site. The settings page updates so you can select the sections from the page you want to push to the child site.
  5. Select all sections on that page that you want to push to the child site.
  6. Select Push to child site.
  7.  Select all child sites that should have these settings. At this point you see all child sites in the hierarchy including child sites of child sites. Select all child sites that should have the same settings as the parent.
  8. When you are done selecting all child sites, select Next, validate. During the validation, the platform confirms that the child site can receive the settings.
  9. After validation, select Next, queue sync. The synch between parent and child runs every hour. So you may have to wait up to an hour before your child site receives the site settings from the parent site.
  10. You can return to the settings page, and select View sync details to get an update on whether the sync has completed.

Any changes you make to the parent settings you pushed, automatically get pushed to the selected child sites within the hour.

Push branding

After you create a child site, you can ensure it looks and feels the same way as the parent by pushing all branding settings from the parent to the child.

Only the domain admin can push branding to a child site. Site admins on the child site see all branding settings grayed out when the domain admin pushes branding to a child site.

To push branding:

  1. Log in with your domain admin account to the parent site.
  2. Go to Site Settings > Site branding. All branding settings get pushed to the child site. You cannot select some settings and not others. If you want the child site to have its own brand, you must set it up independently on the child site.
  3.  After you select the Branding page, select Push to child site.
  4.  Select all child sites that should have these settings. At this point you see all child sites in the hierarchy including child sites of child sites. Select all child sites that should have the same settings as the parent.
  5. When you are done selecting all child sites, select Next, validate. During the validation, the platform confirms that the child site can receive the brand settings.
  6. After validation, select Next, queue sync. The synch between parent and child runs every hour. So you may have to wait up to an hour before your child site receives the site settings from the parent site.
  7. You can return to the Branding page, and select View sync details to get an update on whether the sync has completed.

Any changes you make to the parent brand, automatically get pushed to the selected child sites within the hour. Site admins of the child site cannot edit pushed branding.

Push user attributes

After you create a child site, you can ensure it behaves the same way as the parent by pushing some or all user attributes from the parent to the child.

Only the domain admin can push user attributes to a child site.

Some things to keep in mind when you push user attributes:

  • You can choose which user attributes get pushed.
  • When you push a user attribute, the user attribute on the child site becomes grayed out and the site admin cannot edit it.
  • The site admin sees the attribute with a Global label indicating that the user attribute came from the parent site.
  • If the user attribute is a list type without the ability to add value, the child site admin cannot add any values to the list.
  • If the user attribute is a list type with the ability to add a value, when the attribute gets synced to the child, that setting becomes locked. The child site retains the values that get added to the parent and cannot create new ones.
  • Admins on child sites can use pushed user attributes to create audiences.

To push user attributes:

  1. Log in with your domain admin account to the parent site.
  2. Go to User management > User attributes.
  3. You can push one attribute at a time or many all at once.
    • Push one attribute: Locate the attribute in the list, from the Actions menu select Push to child site.
    • Push many attributes at once: Select the Bulk actions menu, select all attributes, the select Push to child site.
  4.  Select all child sites that should have these user attributes. At this point you see all child sites including child sites of child sites. Select all child sites that should have the same user attributes as the parent.
  5. When you are done selecting all child sites, select Next, validate. During the validation, the platform confirms that the child site can receive the user attributes.
  6. After validation, select Next, queue sync. The synch between parent and child runs every hour. So you may have to wait up to an hour before your child site receives the user attributes from the parent site.
  7. You can return to the User Attribute page, and for each attribute you choose to push, you can select View sync details from the Actions menu to get an update on whether the sync has completed.

Push audiences

After you create a child site, you can ensure it behaves the same way as the parent by pushing some or all audiences from the parent to the child.

Only the domain admin can push audiences to a child site.

Some things to keep in mind when you push audiences:

  • You can choose which audiences get pushed.
  • You can choose audiences created with a list, string, or date attribute. Before you can push an audience created using the attributes, must first push the user attributes to a child site .
  • You cannot choose audiences when they have been set up:
    • With the Percipio user type attribute
    • With the standard user attributes of direct manager or Percipio role
    • As a child audience
    • Using team automation
    • With individual users selected
  • When you push an audience, site admins on the parent site cannot edit the audience. Only domain admins can edit an audience that has been pushed to a child site. If a domain admin edits an audience, the changes automatically get synced to the child.
  • The site admin of a child site can add audience owners or administrators and content to a shared audience, but they cannot edit the audience name or rules used to define the audience.
  • Audience owners, administrators, and channel information does not get synced to the child site.
  • The site admin sees the attribute with a Global label indicating that the audience came from the parent site or was pushed to a child site.

To push an audience:

  1. Log in with your domain admin account to the parent site.
  2. Push the user attributes to the child sites that define the audiences you want to push.
  3. Go to User management > Audiences.
  4. Locate the audience in the list, from the Actions menu select Push to child site.
  5.  Select all child sites that should have this audience. At this point you see all child sites including child sites of child sites. Select all child sites that should have the same audience as the parent.
  6. When you are done selecting all child sites, select Next, validate. During the validation, the platform confirms that the child site can receive the audience.
  7. After validation, select Next, queue sync. The sync between parent and child runs every hour. So you may have to wait up to an hour before your child site receives the audience from the parent site.
  8. You can return to the Audience page, and for each audience you choose to push, you can select View sync details from the Actions menu to get an update on whether the sync has completed.
